When a rocket takes off, you may see water pouring down the runway. Many think this is to cool the engines or prevent fires, but there is another, more important reason. This system is called the Water Sound Suppression System, and its purpose is to dampen the extreme sound waves produced when the rocket engines fire. During a launch, more than two million gallons of water are sprayed in about 50 seconds, starting just before the engine ignites and continuing until after the rocket leaves the pad. Rocket engines produce sound waves of great intensity, enough to damage surrounding structures and even endanger the rocket itself. The water spray helps absorb up to 97.5 percent of the sound energy, reducing the risk of damage from excessive sound pressure.
