Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Akram Khan’s reimagination of the archetypal Romantic ballet is fast earning a reputation as a modern masterpiece.
Plucking the innocent Giselle from her village, Khan’s version sees the action moved to a condemned garment factory, where a community of migrant workers serve at the mercy of the factory’s landlords. The ghostly figures of their victims form a vengeful and awe-inspiring cabal within Academy Award-winning Tim Yip’s towering set.
Both familiar and innovative, Vincenzo Lamagna’s adaptation of the original Adolphe Adam’s score is performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic.
