This is Iwo Jima, just 8 square miles in size. But during World War II, Iwo Jima was a critical
location between Japan and U.S. air bases in the Mariana Islands. The U.S. needed it badly to
launch bombing raids on Japan and to provide emergency landing for damaged B-29 bombers.
But the Japanese knew that too. So, they turned the island into hell.
Underground bunkers, hidden tunnels, machine guns in every corner made the island a death
trap. When the U.S. landed, they thought it would be a quick win.
Instead, it became one of the bloodiest battlegrounds of the war.
It took 36 days of savage combat and over 26,000 American casualties to capture it. The iconic
photo of Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi symbolized a costly victory — and why this
small island was so deeply feared.
