Plastic People Of The Universe (named after Frank Zappa song), were an underground band from Prague, then Czechoslovakia, now Czech republic. They were known for fusing various genres, improvising, avant-garde elements, using both traditional and modern instruments, theatrical live performances, and much more… all that, despite being relentlessly chased by the socialist, totalitarian government for nearly 2 decades.
They were banned from recording and performing officially, and most records are live recordings from underground concerts, where only selected individuals could go, in secrecy, amidst the danger of being put on the list of “disidents” - people who are opposing the regime. Their concerts were later raided, where they would beat up and even imprison the attendees.
They used mostly lyrics written by a poet Egon Bondy. Their main inspiration was aromentioned Frank Zappa, Velvet Underground, and many other western bands at the time.
