Tensions between South Africa and the US are still mounting. Last week, Trump imposed sanctions on South Africa, suspending aid, as a result of the new land reform law signed into law. According to President Trump, South Africa is taking and confiscating land from South Africa’s white minority. In response, the authorities in South Africa have rejected Trump’s claim and denounced his allegations. Now, in an interesting twist, the European Union and the ambassador of China have declared their support for South Africa. Meanwhile, President Ramaphosa has decided to take a diplomatic approach to clear the tensions. The question is “Why is the EU supporting South Africa and is President Ramaphosa giving in to Trump? Let's find out.

The newly signed Expropriation Act was signed in January 2025 by President Ramaphosa to address land inequalities that have persisted for over three decades since the end of white minority rule. According to a data from 2022, farmland in South Africa is still owned by white people three decades after the end of apartheid. White farmers own three quarters of South Africa's privately held land, while white people make up just seven percent of the population of 63 million. Afrikaners make up a small proportion of that group, with no exact data on their number. They are descendants of European colonial settlers who arrived from the 17th century, mostly from Holland and France. Other white people have come to South Africa since and taken more land.

The Expropriation Act is designed to enable the state to reclaim land in the public interest, with the agreement of current private landowners, in an effort to rectify long-standing disparities in land ownership. However, President Trump, under the advice of Elon Musk, has criticized the law, falsely claiming that the South African government has confiscated land from the Afrikaners. As a result, Trump issued an executive order on 7 February, suspending financial aid to South Africa, as a form of punishment. Outlining the reasons for its decision, a statement from the White House explained that it sees the reform as an attack on Afrikaners.
