Charlotte de Berry: Allegedly born in England in 1636, Charlotte de Berry is a figure whose story blends legend and lore. It's said she disguised herself as a man to accompany her sailor husband aboard a naval ship. After his unjust death, she reportedly avenged him and later led a mutiny against a tyrannical captain, taking command as a pirate. Her adventures, including tales of love and shipwreck, are captivating, but historical evidence supporting her existence is scant. Many historians consider her story to be a 19th-century fabrication, making her a legendary, albeit likely fictional, pirate of the seas.
Lyrics:
In England's port, so long ago,
A tale begins where wild winds blow.
Young Charlotte met a sailor bold,
And love struck deep with hearts of gold.
Her parents’ words she would not heed,
For love alone was all her need.
She wed her love, a sailor brave,
And soon their hearts were lost to wave.
Sing high, sing low, let the wild winds roar
Charlotte sailed, her heart on shore
With love and fire, she faced the fight
To live for love, both day and night.
Disguised as man, she joined the crew
With heart so strong and sword so true
Alongside him, her sailor dear
She fought the seas without a fear
But jealous eyes soon cast a plot
An officer's greed began to rot
He schemed to take her love away
And on her husband’s life, betray
Sing loud, sing proud, for love so deep
Charlotte’s vow she swore to keep
With secret strength, she stood her ground
To protect her love from all around
The officer spoke lies of sin
And sent her love to death within
He claimed he’d planned a mutiny
Though innocence was plain to see
Her husband flogged and beaten dead
The stars above their witness bled
The officer, with lustful mind
Sought Charlotte’s heart to own and bind
Sing high, sing low, for vengeance cries
Charlotte’s heart burned ‘neath the skies
With steel in hand, she took her vow
To end the man who killed her now.
The port they reached, her chance was near
She found him drunk without a fear
She plunged the knife, swift and fast
And left him dead in shadows cast
She fled the ship, her sorrow worn
With nothing left but love that’s torn
She worked the docks, her heart turned cold
No dreams of life, no tales of gold
Sing loud, sing proud, let the winds all cry
Charlotte de Berry, her love did die
Through waves and strife, with heart so sore
She lived for vengeance, and nothing more
But fate returned to snatch her will
A merchant captain took her still
He stole her off, made her his bride
And forced her onto seas so wide
His cruel heart, a tyrant’s fist
Each night she fought, her rage dismissed
But soon the crew, they heard her plea
And swore to set her spirit free
Rise high, rise strong, with mutiny’s flame
Charlotte would never live in shame
With sword and steel, her crew did rise
And sent her captor to his demise
With swift revenge, she took command
And sailed her ship with iron hand
Years she spent in pirate’s fame
And none could dare speak ill her name
But love it came once more to find
A planter’s son, so fair and kind
In Grenada’s sun, her heart awoke
And once again, the vow she spoke
Sing soft, sing sweet, love bloomed once more
Charlotte de Berry, her heart did soar
Through winds of change, through seas so wide
She found her love, her sailor’s pride
