Connecting guitar pedals straight to your Audio Interface is a great way to get powerful guitar tones!
Of course, miking up a guitar cab will almost always result in a much better tone, but if you do not have the opportunity to record loud amps or if you can't find an amp sim that works for doom metal, recording pedals straight into your audio interface can be a good alternative. This method works quite well even if you don't have a dedicated preamp pedal. I have gotten good results with connecting just my RAT or fuzz pedals straight to the interface, without preamps. With the right impulse response and some eq you will be surprised how good it can sound.
When connecting the pedals directly, the resulting tone has many unwanted mid frequencies from 300 to 1000 Hz. So it is a good idea to find and tame unwanted frequencies in this area. Also, the use of a virtual power amp can help make the sound more like a real amp. Something like the free TPA-1 Power Amp sim by Ignite Amps works great. Place it just before your Impulse response.
