On this episode of the AIER Standard Ethan Yang sits down with AIER Long Term Research Fellow and Universidad Francisco Marroquín Professor, Will Ogilvie to discuss the ever-present threat of the tyranny of the majority in democratic societies. Will's research focuses on the observations of the great Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville and his journey through 19th-century America.

Tocqueville noted the power and dynamism inherent in a society that promotes equality for all, but also the threat equality poses to the long-term upkeep of freedom. In particular, he noted how a free democratic society is capable of promoting despotism and incompetence through both the state and the mob. The conversation covers the dangers posed by the tyranny of the majority but also the solutions and guard rails that keep a well-functioning democracy alive.
