This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Mazda CX-30 and the Subaru Crosstrek. Both the Subaru Crosstrek and the mazda CX-30 are roughly the same size and the small SUV category is the fastest growing segment of the auto industry. The Crosstrek has two engines and standard AWD. The base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. On the base engine trim there is a 6-speed manual transmission available. The second option is a 2.5L 4-cylinder with 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, it is available on the top two trims. There is a hybrid option available in the US. The CX-30 offers 3 engines. The base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. There is a 2.5L 4-cylinder with 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque and a 2.5L turbo-charged 4 cylinder. On premium fuel it delivers 250 horsepower & 320 lb-ft of torque. On regular fuel, 227 horsepower & 310 lb-ft of torque. The Turbo engine is the only engine that does not offer FWD. One thing to point out is there is no longer a base engine option on the US website. The Crosstrek offers an athletic exterior design with an updated front bumper and grille. Our Outdoor trim test model in Crystal White Pearl has 17” dark grey painted aluminum wheels with a dark grey metallic finish on the front bumper, wheel arches and door mirrors. With the high ground clearance and wide stance, it really adds quite a sporty look to this sub compact SUV. The base model comes standard with halogen headlights, 17” wheels and a spare tire. All CVT trims get EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. The top Limited trim gets the sunroof and 18” wheels.The CX-30 offers a sporty yet sophisticated exterior. There’s a lot of personality and curb appeal to this utility. Our test model in Soul Red Crystal Metallic comes standard with LED headlights, LED rear combination lights, body coloured door handles and power door mirrors, 16” alloy wheels and a spare tire. One up from the base model will get you 18” wheels and heated door mirrors. The top GT trim comes with all the extras like a moonroof, front and rear signature lighting, exterior mirrors with a tilt down function, a piano black front grille, a power liftgate and rear parking sensors. The Crosstrek comes standard with a 6.5” touchscreen, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, cloth seats and a 6-way manual adjustable driver’s seat. One up from the base model comes standard with auto start/stop, keyless access and push bottom start, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. The Outdoor trim comes with the bigger 8” touchscreen, all weather soft material seats, a leather wrapped steering wheel and yellow stitching throughout the cabin. The top Limited trim gets you leather seats with orange stitching, an 8 speaker Harman Kardon sound system and navigation. The CX-30 comes standard with an 8.8 display with Mazda Connect, a 7” LCD display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, power windows, rear heater ducts, cloth seats, heated front seats, 8-way manually adjustable driver’s seat and key-less entry.
One up from the base model adds rear passenger air vents, a heated steering wheel, a leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter Adding the Luxury package for $1900 CAD to this trim gets you driver seat memory, a moonroof, a 10-way power adjustable drivers seat and leatherette trimmed upholstery. On the top GT trim standard features include, leather trimmed upholstery, a 12 speaker Bose premium sound system. a moonroof, a windshield projected active driving display and a power lift-gate. The Crosstrek offers 37 mm or 1.4 inches more front row legroom and 5mm or .2 inches more second row legroom than the CX-30. For rear headroom, the Mazda offers 7 mm or .3 inches more room but the Subaru has 49 mm or 1.7 inches more front headroom. The Crosstrek wins in cargo space offering 285 L or 10 cubic feet more overall space and with the second row up, the Crosstrek has 16L or 0.5 cubic feet extra cargo space.
