The first-ever crossword puzzle was published on December 21, 1913, in the New York World newspaper. Created by journalist Arthur Wynne, it was called a "Word-Cross" and had a diamond-shaped grid with simple clues. It quickly gained popularity, and after a typesetting error flipped the title to "Cross-Word," the name stuck.

Initially dismissed as a fleeting craze, crossword puzzles exploded in popularity during the 1920s, especially after The New York Times introduced its own puzzle in 1942, elevating it to an intellectual pastime. Over the decades, crosswords have remained the world’s most popular word game, evolving into digital formats, cryptic variations, and themed challenges. They are now a daily ritual for millions, appearing in newspapers, books, and mobile apps.

Can you solve it?
