A Missouri slave named Celia killed her master in 1855 after he made an attempt at sexual relations.At trial; her defense cited a Missouri statute that said any woman in that situation could defend herself; however, an all-white jury sentenced her to death because she was property. Nevertheless, because she was pregnant at the time, they waited until after she gave birth because the child was considered her master's property, and they then executed her.
