On 17 January 1960, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, with future-Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, played at Liverpool’s first jazz festival – at the Cavern.
The set started with skiffle songs but then moved to full-on rock’n’roll with Great Balls of Fire, Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On and Brand New Cadillac
The jazz audience hated rock’n’roll. They booed and threw penny coins at the band.
How times changed, 4 months later Rory Storm and the Hurricanes were invited back to headline – the First Beat Night, at the Cavern
Merseybeat had arrived…
