It's makes me regret taking a more academic route to my education as it turns out it also extremely rewarding.
A hands-on vocation would have been so much more suited to my interests and passions.
I hadn't made anything complicated from wood since I was 13. By making this cupboard proved to myself that woodworking is hard to learn, I also proved that to master the skill it would take countless years. To consider myself an true artisan would take decades.
In France, it is great to see many independent tradesmen, with family links going back generations, still alive kicking.
When I walk into Brocantes, I often see antique armoires, stacked side to side for budget prices. Each one probably had hundreds of hours of work in them. The wood alone would be worth more in disassembled parts. I do hope the modern generation continue to value artisan trades.
