Frank Zappa - Zoot Allures Happy Release Day
The album is a masterpiece of dark, slow, sleazy rock. It represents one of Zappa’s strongest accomplishments. The title track and “Black Napkins” showcase impressive musicianship. “Torture” features incessant moaning. “Wonderful Wino” is irredeemably offensive. The vocal tracks stand completely front and center in the mix, which doesn’t help our appreciation. The best cut is a blues instrumental, “Black Napkins,” in which Zappa on guitar leads a simple and melodic blues run through some extremely subtle and uncharacteristically lyrical changes.
