Famous atheist Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, zoologist, and science communicator, debates John Lennox, a bioethicist, mathematician, and Christian apologist. This debate is one of the best I've seen, in terms of character, format, and discussion. But what struck me the most about the debate was how surprised I was at Richard Dawkins' apparent stubbornness towards "evidence." His worldview presuppositions make it so that it's impossible for miracles to exist. So what does he do with the historical evidence of the resurrection? How Lennox draws this out is interesting.

One thing John said in the debate sums it up: “You're not taking the history very seriously, otherwise, you'd interact with it. And I'm trying to get to why that is so.”I think John knows why, and he's trying to reveal it to the audience.

The issue is that if the resurrection is true, it would completely upend Richard’s worldview. So instead of seriously engaging with the historical evidence for Jesus and the resurrection, he digs in his heels and denies that Jesus even existed. Yet, despite stating that in The God Delusion, he suddenly backpedals mid-debate and concedes that if Jesus existed, so what? He doesn’t see because he chooses not to. This is a textbook example of how a person’s worldview can blind them to the evidence. Dawkins's atheism doesn't allow for miracles. Even when the facts clearly point in one direction, if you're committed to a certain view, you’ll filter everything through it. Richard Dawkins is so locked into a worldview that rules out miracles. So even if he witnessed one, he wouldn’t see it as a miracle. There would have to be some natural explanation.

Whichever side you're on, this is a great debate to observe and understand two different worldviews, and an example of how we can conduct ourselves with Grace and respect in conversations like these.
