I translated the poem "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas into Old Norse, the language spoken by the medieval Scandinavians. It is my voice in the recording.

The Old Norse text is provided at the top of the screen with a semi-literal translation of the Old Norse into English below. The poem has been translated to maintain the A-B-A rhyming scheme, though naturally the syllabic structure and vocabulary is adjusted based on the limitations of Old Norse. I wanted the main points of this beautiful poem to come through in translation, though I also wanted the Old Norse to remain authentically Norse.

The original English poem as written by Dylan Thomas is here:
--
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
--

I hope you enjoyed! If anyone watches this, please let me know if you'd like to see more. I plan to do a series of poetry translations and recordings, so drop any suggestions down below.

For my background, I studied Old Norse at university and currently work as a translator of the modern Scandinavian languages.
