The alveoli are tiny, balloon-like structures in the lungs where the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) takes place. They are located at the end of the bronchial tubes and are the primary sites for the transfer of oxygen into the blood and the removal of carbon dioxide from the blood.

Each alveolus (singular of alveoli) is surrounded by a network of capillaries, which are tiny blood vessels. When you breathe in, oxygen moves from the air inside the alveoli into the blood, while carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled. This process is known as gas exchange and is crucial for providing oxygen to the body and removing waste gases.
