The Pyrenees lithology is one of the oldest to exist in Victoria. These deep sea sedimentary rocks were laid down between 510 to 482 million years ago, and they've undergone numerous changes since those times. From being thrust up above the ocean following numerous tectonic collisions, to being buckled into a tall mountain range, to then, having the very rocks that made up the basement of said mountain range, undergo further metamorphic changes after they were partially melted by the nearby intruding batholithic magma chamber. Which literally baked these sedimentary rocks, changing them from a once colourful, layered type of texture, to one that was more of less solidified, consistent, and smooth. With fine grains dominating the matrix.

In this video we take a look at a hornfel dominated road cutting in the ancient Pyrenees shire, which is home to some of the most remarkable geology that I've ever seen.
