Future. Young Thug. Future. Rich the Kid. Trippie Redd. Kodak Black. Playboi Carti. Ugly God. Smokepurpp. Ski Mask the Slump God. Lil Yachty. Lil Pump. Lil Uzi Vert. Lil Peep. Lil (many, many more). The list of so-called “mumble rappers,” a term coined by Wiz Khalifa in 2016, seems to stretch itself long and thin across the SoundCloud platform and even the Billboard music charts. Was it a version of teenaged/early 20s “emo rap meets trap rap?” Money, jewelry, pill-popping drug use, and death are typically top contenders for content in these songs—often with slurred speech and emphasis on melodic crooning over distinguishable lyrics. But even with its perceived popularity, is mumble rap dead?
