➡️ Perfectionism and checking behaviors: Those with OCD may constantly reread emails, not only for typos but also to make sure they sound extremely competent or that everything is worded perfectly. They may also recheck every task they complete to an excessive degree to be sure it was done just right or in a certain order.
➡️ Avoidance: Individuals with OCD may avoid taking on tasks that they’re afraid will highlight their deficiencies or cause them to fail. They may also avoid asking necessary questions for fear of seeming incompetent.
➡️ Reassurance: OCD sufferers may constantly seek reassurance from supervisors. For example, they may ask if they completed each task correctly to such an excessive degree that employers begin to question whether the individual is actually capable of performing their job well.
➡️ Overworking: Overworking can be caused by different aspects of OCD. A common OCD-related cause is perfectionism, but there can be unexpected causes as well. For example, an individual may spend much more time than necessary at work in order to avoid an OCD-related fear at home.
So what’s the solution? Work with an exposure therapist to learn how to engage in formal, structured exposures to face these fears as well as cut out the compulsions. OCD has no place at work (or anywhere else in your life!)
