In today's video, I'm looking at the Silicon Focus Fuzz from Great Eastern FX Co.This is Great Eastern FX Co's second Focus Fuzz and unlike the first edition which was Germanium this is a silicon style fuzz curcuit.
Built around the unique FOCUS control, the Focus Fuzz effortlessly covers both distortion and fuzz territory, delivering everything from crunchy drive to full-on fuzz.
Focus Fuzz Silicon vs Focus Fuzz – what’s the difference?
The original Focus Fuzz was a hybrid design, using two metal-can silicon transistors and one NOS germanium transistor. This new pedal replaces the germanium transistor with a specially selected low-gain silicon transistor. This, coupled with various other tweaks to the circuit, has allowed us to stay remarkably close to the sought-after sound of the original.
This is a completely original circuit. In a nutshell, it’s a vintage-voiced fuzz that fits with our ethos of designing pedals that deliver instant inspiration and “just sound great” however you set the controls. It delivers an inspiring range of classic tones spanning overdrive, distortion and fuzz and the wealth of interesting territory in between.
We designed the pedal specifically for people who love the idea of a vintage Fuzz Face or Tone Bender, but find these pedals difficult to use in practice. As great as they can sound under the right conditions, these pedals can be quite demanding, requiring the pedal and amp to be set exactly right to really shine. This leads a lot of players to feel that fuzz “just doesn’t work for me”.

The FOCUS knob takes things one step further, progressively adding more gain, bite and aggression to push the guitar firmly to the front of the mix.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.
