Hello everything! Wow! Here are sixteen trippy sydes from the finest sixties’ psychedelic unknowns!! Let’s dig out what we can find about these ones! "Artistic risk is our motto”!
A1- The Rightly Sew is a mystery band, probably from the San Antonio, TX area. All I can say is: Texan psych has no end!! Credits goes to Tafolla & McKaig.
- Alamo Audio Company – 45-115 (1967)
A2- Regis Mull is an artist from Pennsylvania. This is the only single he issued, but the song was covered by the Shocking Blue in 1971. I tend to prefer the way he sings it here. He also wrote “Siamese Cat” for The Cowsills the year before.
- Verve Folkways – KF5049 (Apr 1967)
A3- The Lost Souls is a mystery band from Rhode Island. The single is part of the great Musicor New Talent Series (like B6) and reveals the name of DiLorenzo.
- Musicor Records – NTS-436 (1969)
A4- We’ve already met Those Five in Vol. 3 with the unbeatable A side “Sidewalks”! Here is the flip, which is also a killer!
- Paris Tower – PT-117 (Sept 1967)
A5- The Hustlers were from North Miami, FL. They had formed in 1961. The early lineup starred Paul Curcio, who then joined the Mojo Men (“She’s My Baby”). The Hustlers then released one killer single in 1966 (My Minds' Made Up / If You Try). This song, recorded between 1964-1968 at Phono Graphics in North Miami, FL remained unreleased until the Gear Fab anthology in 2003. Written by Bob Leavitt.
- Reel Tape – none (1964-68)
A6- The Know is a mystery band from Kingsport,TN. They issued this lone fuzzy single in 1968. Credits reveal the names of Jarvis, Cash, Carter, Curry and Pridmore.
- Tri-State Recording Company – TSRC-1771 (1968)
A7 & A8 - Tommy is in fact Tom Sumner, an artist from Wisconsin, who led numerous bands such as The Jaguars (two singles on Cuca and Sara), The Up Stairs (one single, “Operator Please” comped twice) and finally Dominoes, renamed Tommy for the second pressing.
- Phonograph Records – SPJ 171 (1971)
B1- So far, The Summit is a mystery group, but it might have some connections with The Iron Gate from Pennsylvania: they cut Feelin’ Bad in Pennsylvania before moving to Chicago IL to cut their second single on Mobie. Then, I’m not sure if they are the same band, but there is a single by The Shirt Tail Relation, titled The Reason Why, and an acetate of this song by The Iron Gate was discovered. Though, I don’t know if they released the song under another name or if another band played it for the released single. Anyway, the song was written by Bobby Sharp, who also wrote this song by The Summit. Not sure if these three bands had members in common, but the question is worth asking.
- Mobie – 3433 (Jan 1969)
B2- The Cobras IV were from Beverly, Ohio and were active from 1964 to 1967. They released four singles, and their last one was recorded in Nashville, TN. This is their second single, and it’s a killer!
- Spinner Records – 45-260 (1966)
B3- We’ve already met The Royal Colony in Vol. 16. Here is the flip, heavily Hendrix-inspired!
- Pixie – 80803 (Aug 1968)
B4- The Paragon were a christian rock band from around Pittsford, New York. Not much known but these kids know how to play! Members were Joe Sergent, Michael Stevens, Greg Williams, Johnny Oster, Charlie Oster (who wrote both sides).
- Century Records – 29118 (1968)
B5- The Monckenmier Ensemble is a great mystery: it was apparently a New York band, but their single was only issued in Spain!! The sleeve reveals the names of Tassi & Sedita, who would later be in the Hello People!
- Sonoplay – SN-20021 (1967)
B6- Underground Railroad issued one single in 1968. Not sure from where they were, but the single was recorded at AAA Studios in Boston. Led by James Bonaparte.
- Musicor Records - NTS 419 (1968)
