Sometimes we metal musicians and guitarists can overcomplicate writing riffs. We tend to think more notes are better and may even feel an obligation to impress other musicians with our skills.
In this video, we're going to take a step back and simplify the metal riff and songwriting process. We're only using 3 power chords.
However, we're going to show you some simple things you can do to make these chords give your song character and draw in the listener.
The examples cater to the doom metal and death metal sub genres. But these concepts can be applied to writing any sub genre of metal music and on any instrument (guitar, bass, keyboards, ad even vocal melodies).
