Welcome to Alaska and the Denali Highway and the start of an epic Alaskan adventure! It may be June, but the weather on the legendary Denali Highway has other plans—it’s snowing! Join me as I take my 4x4 Sportsmobile camper van on a complete, end-to-end journey along all 136 miles of this incredible road. In this first video of the series, we're starting our Alaska road trip from the eastern entrance in Paxson and beginning our drive west toward Cantwell. If you've ever dreamed of driving this road or are planning your own trip, this is the video for you.
This isn't just a drive; it's a comprehensive Denali Highway travel guide. Throughout this series, I'll be documenting our trip mile by mile, pointing out all the must-see overlooks, historical signs, and crucial Denali Highway mile markers so you can plan your own adventure. We’ll stop at the stunning Alaska Range Wayside overlook at milepost 6.5 and check out amazing backcountry access points like the Swede Lake Trail. From the paved sections near Paxson to the rugged gravel that lies ahead, I'm taking you with me for every single moment.
This journey is a perfect showcase of the Alaskan van life and overlanding experience. I'll give you a behind-the-scenes look at how I pack the van for a multi-day trip, what gear is essential for being self-sufficient in the remote wilderness, and why having recovery equipment is non-negotiable out here. We’ll be camping on the Denali Highway, and I’ll share tips on finding the best spots to park for the night, away from the road for true solitude.
Our ultimate goal on this trip is some fantastic fishing for Arctic Grayling in the pristine rivers and lakes that dot this landscape, including the famous Gulkana River and the Tangle Lakes area. The Denali Highway is renowned for its wildlife, and we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for moose, caribou, and bears as we travel through this vast, glaciated valley. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking, even when it's blowing snow sideways, and the sense of freedom you get out here is unmatched.
Thank you for joining me on this first leg of our journey with Living My Alaska.
