Okinotorishima is a tiny coral reef in the Pacific Ocean, and Japan wants to protect it at all costs. It is the southernmost point of Japanese territory, located about 1,700 kilometers south of Tokyo. The reef is so small that only a few rocks stick out of the water at high tide.

Japan considers Okinotorishima an island, which allows it to claim a large Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around it—up to 200 nautical miles. This EEZ gives Japan special rights to fish, explore, and use natural resources in the surrounding ocean, including oil and minerals.

However, some countries like China and South Korea argue that Okinotorishima is just a rock, not an island. According to international law, a rock does not allow a country to claim an EEZ. If Japan loses this claim, it could lose control over a large area of the ocean.

To protect Okinotorishima, Japan has built concrete barriers and platforms to stop it from sinking under the sea. Scientists and coast guards monitor the reef closely.

For Japan, Okinotorishima is not just a reef—it is a symbol of national territory and maritime power. That’s why they are determined to protect it, no matter how small it seems.
