Hello everything! Here we jump again into 16 amazing sydes from the ravin’ sixties!
Let’s dig out what we can find about these ones!
A1- The Chessmen was a band from British Columbia, Canada that issued four singles between 1964 and 1966, including three on Mercury. This unreleased track taken live is their wildest by far, but they are best known for their great “Love Didn’t Die”. The songs were written by Terry Jacks.
- No Label Tape recording (date unknown)
A2- Spur was a garage/country/psych band from Belleville, IL. They issued one album in 1969 on Cinema International (label that issued the Intruders’ Total Raunch). They were previously known as The Unknowns (they issued 3 singles under that name) and were also the backing band for Father Pat Beckerley, a Christian preacher that released one LP.
- Cinema International CSLP 1500 (1969)
A3- The Townsmen was a Canadian band from Ottawa, Ontario, active until 1969. They issued five singles, most of them on Regency, one of the bigger canadian labels of the time (they were responsible for the canadian pressing of Little Richard, the New Colony Six etc…). An CD anthology featuring a lot of unissued material is available.
- Regency – R 975 (Jun 1967)
A4- The Weeds is a mystery band from San Diego, CA. They issued one single on their Interstate Records. About 5 copies are known to exist.
- Interstate Records 45-70801 (1967)
A5- The Rising Storm was a garage/folk band from the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, active from 1965 to 1967. They issued one album, self-released on their Remnant label, that is now celebrated by garage rock fans. It was recently reissued by Sundazed.
- Remnant – BBA-3571 (1967)
A6- The Castiles was a garage band from New Jersey. They never issued anything at the time, but they are well remembered as they included the young unknown Bruce Springsteen on the guitar! This was taken from an acetate.
- Mr. Music Inc. – no cat# (1966)
A7- The Knaves was a Chicago band that issued two singles on Dunwich records between 1966 and 1967. Actually this song was compiled on Oh Yeah! The Best Of Dunwich Records, but I don’t give a dawn, I love this track.
- Dunwich Records – D-164 (1967)
A8- Stone Garden was a psychedelic band from Lewiston, ID, active from the mid-60s to 1972. They issued one single in 1969 and a retrospective album was issued in 1998. Fortunately, before falling into hard rock, they had the time to cut this unreleased garage track in 1965, as the Knights Of Sound!
- No label recording tape (1965)
B1- The Fringe was a Canadian band from Toronto, Ontario, active from 1967 to 1968. They issued two 45s on Quality, another big Canadian label, after putting out a 100ex promo 5 track EP, pompously titled “Canada's Next Number One Recording Group” by the manager, on which this song was. Their best known track is Token From My Mind. The lead guitarist Chuck Cadman later became a thrice-elected Member of Parliament.
- Not On Label – no cat# (1967)
B2- Mystery band from Ohio, issued on a label from Akron, OH.
- HR Records – 606 (1967)
B3- Randy And The Rainbows was a Doo-Wop/Rock’n’Roll band formed in 1962 in Maspeth, NY. Their song “Denise” was a hit, and would later become Blondie’s “Denis”. They tried garage rock in 1966, in an attempt to renew them. This unreleased acetate song was probably made in this line. Their last single was issued in 1967.
- Angel Sound – acetate (1967?)
B4- The Hallmarks was a band from Oceanport and Long Branch, NJ. They are best known for the unreleased version “I Know Why” of “Soul Shakin’ Psychedelic Sally”, compiled on Back From The Grave. A number of unreleased songs turned up on youtube, including this one.
- Unissued recording tape (date unk)
