DEFINITION:
Osmosis is the spontaneous movement of solvent molecules through a semipermeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration. The process aims to equalize the solute concentrations on both sides of the membrane.
Key Points:
1. Semi-permeable membrane: Allows solvent molecules (like water) to pass but blocks larger solute particles.
2. Passive process: No external energy is required; it occurs due to natural concentration differences.
3. Direction of flow: Water moves from a dilute solution (hypotonic) to a concentrated solution (hypertonic).
4. Stops at equilibrium: When solute concentrations balance (isotonic), net water movement ceases.
IMPORTANCE:
- Essential for biological systems (e.g., water absorption in plant roots, kidney function in humans).
- Used industrially (e.g., desalination, water purification).
Example: If a cell is placed in saltwater, water leaves the cell (shrinking it), whereas in freshwater, water enters (swelling or bursting it).
