Just by taking a look at a map of Afghanistan, you can see that its geography is awful. It’s rugged, mountainous, landlocked, and has a harsh arid climate. It seems like barely anyone would live here, yet, 44 million people do. That makes it bigger than Ukraine, a similarly sized country with extremely fertile land perfect for human settlement. So, why do so many people live in what seems to be such an awful place?
