We continue our journey west from Paxson, exploring the crucial stretch between mile markers 21 and 42. I’ll take you past key landmarks like the Tangle Lakes Campground, the famous Tangle Lakes Lodge, and the beautiful Rock Creek. I'll share updates on which lodges are open and what services you can expect, which is critical information since there's no cell service out here. If you're planning your own trip, you'll want to take note of the Tangle River and Maclaren River Lodge at mile 42, a vital stop for fuel and a warm meal.
The highlight of this leg is our ascent to Maclaren Summit at mile 37. As we climb, the rain turns to sleet and then to heavy, wet snow, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland. I'll even pull over to show you just how intense the conditions get. Driving the rough, pothole-filled gravel road in a snowstorm is an adventure in itself, and it’s a powerful reminder to always be prepared when overlanding in Alaska.
Along the way, we’ll also spot some incredible beaver lodges, marveling at the brilliant engineering of these animals who have shaped the local ecosystem with countless beaver ponds. We're making our way toward Clearwater Creek for some grayling fishing and more camping, but first, we have to navigate this incredible summer blizzard.
