Industrial Rock is a genre of music that arose in the late 80s and arguably peaked in popularity in the late ;90s with the aforementioned artists selling millions of records on major labels..

However, the genre has dark underground roots, arising from post-punk, Gothic, Industrial music, and Avant garde noise scenes. The term " Industrial music" was originally coined by the British experimental group Throbbing Gristle.

In the late 1980s, underground artists such as Ministry, Godflesh, Foetus and KMFDM fused Industrial music with heavy metal guitars creating the sub genre of Industrial Metal.
