It was made in 1979. My remixer and co-producer, Rick Gianatos, had done a deal to produce Shirley Bassey for United Artists. He asked me to write a song for her, and I wrote "The Starlight Is Gone". It was like my answer to Barry Manilow's "Copacabana", but this was a story about a faded movie star who had been beautiful but had grown old, and had no career, having spent all her money so she lived in poverty.
One of my singers from that period was Marie Toland, who duetted with Tony O'Keefe for a band called Twilight Affair, who were signed to Panorama records owned by Cory Robbins. I asked her to make the demo for Shirley Bassey and I fell in love with her vocal. Rick's relationship with Shirley Bassey ended in tears, very acrimoniously, and she refused to speak to him again. So rather than waste this song, I let Marie remain the lead vocalist, and we offered it to RSO records. It certainly came out as a demo, but whether it ever got released is debatable. And now, 46 years later, on the suggestion of my dear friend and fan, Soren Jensen, we finally made a video for it which all my fans will adore.
