On June 27, 2002, legendary bassist John Entwistle of The Who passed away in his sleep at age 57, from a heart attack caused by cocaine use in his Las Vegas hotel room, just one day before the band’s U.S. tour was set to begin.

🎶 Legacy of a Low-End Legend
Nicknamed “The Ox” and “Thunderfingers,” Entwistle was one of the most influential rock bassists in history. A founding member of The Who, he redefined the role of bass guitar, playing fast, loud, and fearlessly melodic—often acting as the lead instrument in tracks like “My Generation,” “The Real Me,” and “Boris the Spider,” the latter written and sung by Entwistle himself.
His pioneering lead bass style, use of treble-rich tones, and thunderous live presence earned him universal acclaim. Rolling Stone ranked him among the Top 10 Greatest Bassists of All Time, and his gear setup remains legendary for its volume and innovation. Offstage, Entwistle was also an artist, collector, and quiet force behind The Who’s chaos.
Though gone too soon, his basslines still rattle speakers and inspire generations of players.
