Jack Johnson is viewed by many as being an easy breezy surfer who strums his guitar on the beach making simplistic music. This why his songs are so often heard on the background music system at tropical resorts and spas the world wide. While it is certainly true that his music can be deeply soothing melodically, it is far from mellow and light when it comes to lyrical content. You have to go back several decades to find an artist to compare to Jack in regard to this dichotomy. The closest comparisons would be to Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Both produced albums that relaxed the listener with strumming guitars and rhythmic percussion while also jabbing them in the heart with emotionally and politically charged lyrics. Jack Johnson has continued this tradition throughout his career. In reality surfing is also very similar to this experience: many moments of calm tranquility punctuated by intense heart racing exhilaration. There is nothing wrong with fun, carefree music of course. However if you examine popular music from the past 50 years you will quickly discover that the songs and artists that stay relevant are almost always the ones that dare to push the boundaries of public and personal perception.
