The original Simble pedal came out in 2014, and it’s gone down as being one of the best Dumble In A Box style overdrives around. Natural sounding, dynamic and open, the Simble has become something of a standard for achieving the iconic Dumble sound in an affordable, pedal format.
And now, Mad Professor is back with a new take on the classic! The Simble Mk2 was designed by Lassi Ukkonen – who designed the original Simble, and many other Mad Professor classics – and he’s made this new version more open sounding with more headroom, as well as giving the Contour (i.e. the tone control) more brightness.
This should ensure that the Simble Mk2 responds ideally to any guitar, pickup type, pedal or amp situation you throw at it. Coming in at €199, the Simble Mk2 is certainly not the cheapest overdrive out there, but if the original Simble was anything to go by, it’ll be well worth it.
Controlling this beast is a simple affair: you get a Level control for your volume, Sensitivity (this controls the amount of distortion and compression), Contour )that’s your tone, with unity at 12 o’clock) and Accent. The Accent knob controls the tonal range of the distortion and your pick attack. All the way down, it doesn’t do anything, and it becomes more pronounced the more you wind it up.
Being a Dumble type pedal, then, the Simble Mk2 should excel at anything from a sparkly clean boost to lower gain transparent overdrives, some mid-pushed rock tones, and even some throaty harder rock sounds. Of course, the list of top class players who’ve used Dumble amps over the years is impressive, taking in the likes of John Mayer, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and more – so the Simble Mk2 should cover a whole lot of tonal ground.
How good is it really, though? That’s what we’re about to find out! In this video, I put the Simble Mk2 through its paces in as many musical styles as possible, from country, folk, blues and pop to rock, punk, indie and even some metal, to hear how it handles it all.

My setup was as follows: I ran the Simble Mk2 into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. The amp went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done.
