The 10th National Assembly faces mounting criticism as controversies deepen public distrust in Nigeria’s legislature. From allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, to accusations of bribery linked to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s suspension, the Nigerian Senate is under intense scrutiny.
Akpoti-Uduaghan also petitioned Senator Nedamwen Imasuen for disbarment over alleged past misconduct in the U.S., further exacerbating the credibility crisis. Prominent figures like former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former President Goodluck Jonathan have weighed in, warning about the legislature’s declining reputation and its implications for Nigeria’s global standing.
