The chemical reaction of sodium and water is a reaction between a metal and water, in which alkali (sodium hydroxide) is formed and gas (hydrogen) is released. The equation of this reaction can be written as follows:
2Na + 2H2O = 2NaOH + H2 ↑
This reaction is accompanied by the release of heat and light as well as hissing and flashing. This is due to the fact that sodium is a very active metal that easily gives up its electron on the outer shell and forms a positive ion. Water, on the other hand, is a weak oxidizing agent that accepts this electron and decomposes into a hydroxide ion and atomic hydrogen. The hydrogen is then oxidized with oxygen from the air and burns with a characteristic pop sound.
