The meaning of the legendary Round Table of the celtic king, Arthur, extends far beyond the stuff of old tales. On one hand, it presents the ideal picture of what knighthood should be: on the other, it has become the designated symbol for the perfect society. Since the early Middle Ages, the Round Table has been viewed as a prototype and as a model of an intellectual community. Allied groups of power and strength which are united through common interests, ideals, and goals are symbolized through the metaphor of a table in the shape of a circle. Innumerable legendary tables and figures, ranging from Parzival and the Holy Grail, to Tristan, can be traced back to King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table.
