Join us for a day trip to Gaisberg and a delicious alpine-style lunch atop a mountain! This is one of the easiest day trips from Salzburg and the mountain views are spectacular. We really wanted to go hiking while we were in Salzburg and Gaisberg proved to be a super easy day trip. Gaisberg is a local mountain in Salzburg located just a few kilometres from the Old Town, and it stands 1,288 meters above sea level.

To get there, we took bus # 151 from Mirabellplatz. It was a 30-minute bus ride and we got off at Zistelalm to hike the rest of the way to the top. There were various trails to choose from all varying in length and level of difficulty. There were some steep trails that lead straight to the top and others that zig-zagged at a lesser incline. Hiking in Gaisberg was very easy and enjoyable, and the best part, was the alpine restaurant on the mountain top!

We ate at Goasn Wirtshaus, where we ordered Marend, a casual snack usually served on a wooden block, that includes a mix of mountain cheeses, cured meats, sausages, lard spreads and bread. This one also had grapes, lingonberries, olives, walnuts, eggs - basically, everything you could possibly want from a snacking board! Aside from that, we also got the Kasnocken (the Austrian version of Käsespäztle) which consists of noodles in a pan with melted cheese and crispy onions. And because we had just climbed a mountain, we also enjoyed two steins of beer! It was the perfect alpine-style lunch and we left more than satisfied.

So, if you find yourself visiting Salzburg and are craving a bit of nature, consider a day trip to Gaisberg!

Salzburg Day Hike & Alpine Food Tour 🏔️🍻🥨

Join us as we swap city streets for mountain peaks, earn cold beers and devour a hearty Marend platter on Gaisberg—just a bus ride from downtown Salzburg!

1. Missed the Bus, Found a Garden

We start at Mirabellplatz, planning to catch Bus 151 up Gaisberg.

Missed our connection by one minute, so we chill in the stunning Mirabell Gardens under perfect autumn sun.

2. Gaisberg Bound

Board Bus 151 with our Region Salzburg State pass—valid on buses & trams across the city region.

Hop off at Zistelalm; the bus winds up a scenic, serpentine road shared with cyclists and dotted with traditional alpine guesthouses.

3. Trail Choices & Snacks

Multiple trails to the summit: the steep “goat path” or a friendlier zigzag route we chose for its gentler incline and better views.

Mid-hike snack break: crisp apples & juicy mandarins from home—perfect fuel for the uphill.

4. City to Countryside Reflection

We chat about how our travel tastes have shifted: trading mega-cities (Tokyo, New York) for rural escapes & mountain air.

Salzburg strikes the ideal balance: small-city charms with superb access to nature.

5. Summit Victory Beers 🍺

“Climbing a mountain entitles you to a half-litre of beer,” we declare—then crack open two icy local drafts at the Gaisberg summit.

Best beers ever? Maybe not—but in that moment, they hit the spot!

6. Alpine Feast: Marend & Käsespätzle

Marend platter arrives on a wooden board, piled with:

Assorted mountain cheeses & cream cheese spreads

Cured meats & prosciutto

Pickled peppers, grapes, walnuts & fresh berries

Hard-boiled egg wedges & crusty bread

Käsespätzle (Pan-fried egg noodles with melted cheese & crispy onions) steals the show for cheesy comfort.

Bonus side salad—neglected but appreciated for balance!

7. Flavor Mash-Up in One Bite

We build a single “ultimate bite”: herb cream cheese, prosciutto, berries and walnut on bread.

Results? A colourful, eclectic burst of sweet, salty & creamy textures worthy of an adventurous palate.

8. Mission Accomplished

Every last crumb disappears—no leftovers here!

Total cost: €35 for two half-litres of beer, the Marend board & large Käsespätzle. Complete value for alpine bliss.

9. Final Thoughts & Recommendations

Difficulty: Moderate; perfect for beginner to intermediate hikers.

Duration: ~1 hour uphill (+ beer + lunch + bus ride back).

Why Go: Spectacular city views, serene trails, and unforgettable alpine cuisine just outside Salzburg.
