There are currently 195 official countries in the United Nations, with South Sudan holding the title of the world's newest recognized country since 2011. But this title could soon pass to Bougainville—a pair of islands in the Pacific, currently part of Papua New Guinea. In a recent referendum, an overwhelming 98% of Bougainville’s 300,000 citizens voted in favor of independence.
