Emily Pasillas’ talk on college admissions takes a strong stance about the realities of the college application process and what high school students face in today’s society. Pasillas reflects on her own college journey as a current senior and exposes some commonalities between her and her peers relating to comparison, competition, and feeling behind. However, she comes to the realization and truth that discovering one’s own path is how a student can truly shine in their application, rather than striving to become like someone else. Emily Pasillas is a senior at Valencia High School. At school, Emily wears many hats such as being the National Honor Society President, co-Editor-in-Chief of El Tigre, a founder of two clubs on campus, and a Cambridge Academy student. Outside of school, Emily interns at the REACH Foundation and started her own creative writing program, Imagination Team. Emily tutors on the side to save up for college, which she hopes to attend on the East Coast! You can find Emily drinking coffee and writing poetry in her free time. In the future, Emily hopes to become a poetry author and work for a non-profit that advocates against social inequality. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
