This was the very first song I ever wrote for Sowulo, composed sometime in 2012 on the piano for the ‘Alvenrad’ album. It embodies Midwinter, the darkest days of the year, symbolizing "nothingness" and "death," yet also the moment from which all things emerge into existence.
The song was born from my own yearning to create music for celebrating the turning of the seasons, to accompany the pagan feasts that honor the eternal cycle of nature. From this, the concept of expressing the four seasons and the eight pagan Sabbats was born, and with it, the name Sowulo, derived from Proto-Germanic, meaning ‘the Sun.’ Thus, the journey of Sowulo began.
I revisited these tracks to honour the emergence of Sowulo, and to celebrate how far Sowulo has come. These songs are a symbol of Sowulo's conception to me, with the track Yule even being the first song I ever wrote for the project in 2012.
Sowulo's sound has also changed quite a lot over the years, so it felt very logical to remake these originally acoustic and intimate tracks into our current big and cinematic sound with the addition of our viking-orchetsra.
Thank you for being on this journey with me for over 10 years now. I hope you will enjoy the revisited versions of Yule and Ginnungagap!
