HEY HEY HEY NOTICE THAT I SAID SOMETIMES.

Because life is nuanced and people are nuanced and mental health is nuanced.

But for some people - sometimes - doing the work on their own can be better than seeing a therapist.

The two times I’ve seen a therapist, they were great people but didn’t do ANYTHING beyond just validating and being accountability for me to bring to the table what I already knew I had to do.

Especially when it comes to OCD and anxiety, you need more than just the basic level connection and validation and therapeutic sounding board. I’m sorry. You don’t like hearing that. But it’s not enough and it could actually make things WORSE because it could turn into ritualistic rumination or reassurance seeking or confessing.

Unfortunately not a lot of therapists understand this, so unless you’re working with a specialist who really gets it, it’s kind of a roll of the dice.

And before you come at me, look up the stepped care approach/model. Plz. Since the pandemic and we had to shift our approach to mental health services with more reliance on self help and virtual options, lots of research has come out to show that SOME PEOPLE in SOME SITUATIONS do not NEED 1:1 services. The stepped care approach aims to give people the most sufficient services possible while depleting as few resources as possible. Ie - how can you get the most bang for your buck, the highest quality care that YOU NEED, without overspending (not just spending $, spending time and effort as well). Basically being efficient and balancing QUALITY of care vs TYPE of care.

So my advice to you is to be open to other modalities. If you’re in therapy and it’s great then I love that for you. If you’re like the thousands of others who have been let down by the system, can’t afford traditional care, or have other barriers, it’s not a failure or mistake to seek self help options. Learning from a highly skilled expert may be, in some cases, better than working with a therapist who has NO IDEA how to address OCD/anxiety or unknowingly makes it worse.

If you’re not sure where to start, DM me or comment the word RESOURCES and I’ll send you a link 🙌♥️
