We’re building a safe room under the garage in our new house.
I want this room to be 100 percent fireproof so it’s completely encased in concrete.
I’m mixing up some hydraulic cement to fill in the ends of the metal decking underneath the garage floor above.
There’s gonna be a Fort Knox Vault Door right here in the basement to enter the room.
Every part of this room is surrounded by concrete except for the high points in the metal decking just on the one end where it meets the framing.
I’m forcing hydraulic cement back into these spaces to seal them off.
Hydraulic cement gets hard really quick, so I only have about 3 minutes to work with it.
You can see here it’s already starting to get hard.
This round opening below is for an HVAC cold air return and there’s one on the other side for a supply.
These will have fire dampers that shut in case there’s ever a fire.
Next, I’m going to use a 4-hour fire barrier to seal up these little gaps- these are too small for hydraulic cement, but this sealant did a perfect job.
This room will actually get a drop ceiling for insulation, duct work, and lighting; so, all of this work I did today will be covered up.
Let me know in the comments if you want to see the vault door being installed. @hausplans
