As well as embracing the new rock'n'roll from America, the UK had its own music scene developing. Trad jazz bands were very popular in the 1940s and by the early 1950s skiffle groups developed from these trad jazz bands. American rock'n'roll influenced the skiffle groups and British rock'n'roll stars emerged. Tommy Steels was the first British rock'n'roll star and he was soon followed by Marty Wilde, Billy Fury and a host of others. By the end of the 1950s rock'n'roll groups began to morph into beat groups. With beat groups the focus was on the group as a unit, rather than just the lead singer.
