Did you know that Ritchie Valens, was a talented multi instrumentalist, playing guitar, drums, and trumpet? Ritchie Valens was born Richard Steven Valenzuela on May 13, 1941, in Los Angeles, California. He was first signed to a music contract in 1958 at age 17. Being of both Native American and Mexican descent, he recorded songs in both English and Spanish, bridging the gap between cultures and appealing to a diverse audience. He only recorded music for 8 months before his untimely death in the plane crash that also took the life of Buddy Holly. His breakout hit, "La Bamba," reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart making him the first Latino artist to have a number one hit on the Billboard charts. He continues to inspire artists to this day.
