Driven by the conviction that their people were superior to the rest, the first leaders of one of the youngest nations on the planet - the United States - expanded their domains in North America. But then, unlike empires like the Spanish or British, American presidents gave up conquering and administering colonies far from their borders. Its expansion was more economic and political than geographic; presenting itself as the savior of democracy and freedoms in the world, the United States liberated Western Europe from Hitler and Stalin, but also worked to weaken the democratic government of Salvador Allende in Chile and disrupted the political order in the Middle East by invading Iraq under false pretenses. Today, although the United States continues to be the world's leading military power, after decades without rivals, Xi Jinping's China has set out to wrest that power away from it. At the same time, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the exposure of NATO’s eastern flank have pushed European allies to once again lean on the US for support. But the United States under Trump is not the same country anymore.
