Originating from Rio Grande Valley in Texas, the group told Brown Bag they formed in 2022 with just three members: Julian, Beto, and Juan. Payo, the group’s lead singer, joked about feeling “stranger danger” when Juan slid into his DM to ask him to join the group after seeing his TikTok cover songs.
The original members, who initially looked to play at weddings and Quinceañeras as a part of an “add-on” to Julian’s freelance photography, never expected their third uploaded song, “No Se Va,” to go viral and give them the push into fame. The group revealed they hesitated to release the track for over a month, scared people wouldn’t like it because it wasn’t a cumbia.
While many thought they’d be another one-hit wonder, the group’s popularity only grew with collaborations with Regional Mexican artists like Carin Leon and Fuerza Regida, producing chart-topping hits and cementing their status as forced to be reckoned with in the Tex-Mex regional genre.
Their new-found fame reached new heights when global sensation Bad Bunny reached out to collaborate and break the internet with the song “x100to,” which group members revealed is a play on Bad Bunny’s 2018 album, “X100pre.” The group talked about getting goosebumps remembering their Coachella appearance with Benito, claiming to still watch the videos to remember it wasn’t only a dream.
The group opened up about their day-to-day schedule when performing, taking inspiration from classic regional artists like Duelo and Intocable, adjusting to fame and now owning the recording studio they once rented per hour to record their music.
While the group decided to plead the fifth when asked about possibly making songs in English, you can follow them on Instagram: @grupofrontera and across music-streaming platforms to keep up with new music.
