Habibi Funk is a record label dedicated to re-releasing music from the SWANA region. Everything from Libyan reggae, to Moroccan funk and Egyptian disco via Lebanese folk.

Some months ago I played 2 DJ gigs in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I spent some days afterwards in order to dive into Malaysian music. My favorite records that I picked up were a large stack of LPs produced by the National Radio of Malaysia, RTM (Radio Talivishen Malaysia). These were largely produced in small numbers for broadcast purposes and consisted of recordings of the radio's in-house band and composers such as Alfonso Soliano, Ahmad Nawab, Johari Salleh, Harish Haron, Din Osman, Rahman Rahmat and more. Sonically I was particularly drawn to the releases where these composers translated genres like jazz, funk and soul into their largely instrumental tracks. 

Quite quickly after listening to these records I was reminded of some of the music produced by Algerian composers such as Ahmed Malek and Saâd Kezim for the national radio RTA (Radio Télévision Algérienne). Ahmed Malek has been at the heart of what we do at the Habibi Funk record label so maybe this connection makes more sense to me than to most people. Either way, apart from the sonic resemblances, there is also the connection of a time where states employed musicians and composers at their national radios to spread music and culture. 

The mix goes back and forth, one track from Algeria followed by one from Malaysia and so on. Big up to @sputnikrekordz & @nazarethmohd who first introduced me the the music of RTM and everyone else who shared knowledge and tracks with me that ended up in this mix one way or another.
