On 7 August 1998, two bombs were detonated almost simultaneously outside the United States embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. A total of 224 people were killed in the explosions, 213 of them as a result of the bomb in Nairobi, which caused the total collapse of the nearby Ufundi Building and wounded an estimated 4,000 people over a radius of almost half a mile. The following day, ITN's Tim Ewart arrived to report on the ongoing international effort to rescue survivors trapped underneath the rubble, as well as the beginning of the American investigation into what was a shockingly sophisticated, internationally coordinated terror attack.

The US embassy bombings of 1998 (known in America as the East African embassy bombings) marked the beginning of a new era in global security. Timed to coincide with the anniversary of the arrival of US troops in Saudi Arabia during the 1991 Gulf War, the attacks were claimed by an organisation calling itself the "Liberation Army for the Holy Sites". The attack was in fact directed by Osama Bin Laden, and carried out by members of Al Qaeda and Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ). After observing a candlelight vigil at the Nairobi bomb site on 10 August, ITN's Mark Austin correctly assessed the challenge facing the US in its new struggle against non-state actors such as Al Qaeda: "President Clinton vowed again tonight to spare no effort in tracking down the bombers, but the list of American enemies is long, and the reality is preventing further terrorist attacks like this one is an almost impossible task."
