This experiment was an attempt to give voice to the voiceless, to amplify the quiet life of a being dear to me. The experiments were challenging but my companion played his part perfectly. His voice came from nothing and was all at once everywhere, booming and rhythmic, slow and indecipherable. His movements were steadily paced, with intermittent pauses of exploration and consideration. Like a giant, plotting the next course of their massive and undulating frame. The experiments were concluded, the recordings bound in the shed skin of the performer.
Each track was recorded using a different method.
1 - Slithering Through Hands - Contact microphone against the body of the snake, letting him glide across the surface of the microphone as he moved between my hands.
2 - Sliding Over Dirt - Contact microphone buried 1 inch in dirt in the corner of the terrarium, while the snake moved across the surface of the dirt.
3 - Shedding - Directional microphone in front of the snake, snake shed, and my hands as I played with both.
4 - Feeding - Directional microphone pointed towards the snake while feeding him two dead mice.
